This Year In Music Advocacy 2017

2017 was a great year for music advocacy and here’s the recap of our efforts as members of The Recording Academy’s advocacy initiatives:

  • Four pro-music bills were introduced with bipartisan support. Heading into 2018, both the Fair Play Fair Pay Act and the AMP Act have more than 30 co-sponsors each.
  • After President Trump’s budget proposed eliminating the National Endowment for the Arts, our advocates rallied Congress and funding was not only preserved but increased.
  • Just a few weeks after we advocated for its passage at GRAMMYs on the Hill, the House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed H.R. 1695, a bill to modernize the U.S. Copyright Office.
  • District Advocate day continued to reach new milestones. Recording Academy advocates participated in all 50 states, and District Advocate was a nationally trending topic on Twitter.
  • Continuing years of sustained advocacy with the Producers & Engineers Wing, the FCC moved forward a new rule to improve wireless microphone operability.
  • Across our local Chapters, members secured legislative victories in GeorgiaLouisiana, and Texas to promote and protect music creators.

Remember, you don’t have to be a member of the Recording Academy to let your local legislators know that creators being paid fairly for their work are important to you. See our current issues and get more information on how to take action here.
